The morning of September 11, 2001 I was at work in White Plains near the Westchester County airport. I had gotten into work at about 8:30 and about 20-25 minutes after getting there received a phone call from my husband who was on his way to New Rochelle for a real estate closing. He told me that he had been listening to Howard Stern and that there was mention of a plane hitting the World Trade Center. He had switched channels and was listening to 1010 WINS in order to get more information. At the time we both thought the plane was mostly likely a small one whose pilot had had a heart attack at the controls. My co-workers and I tried to get news online, but ended up going into my boss's office to watch TV. The only station we could pick up was a Spanish one so we watched the events unfold on TV while listening to CNN on the radio.

Being about 8 months pregnant at the time I was extremely nervous once we realized that the tragic events in NYC and Washington DC were most likely the result of terrorist attacks. Being near the airport further worried me as they were beginning to shut things down in my area and were bringing in alot of police with automatic rifles and other heavy equipment. I did not linger at the office much after the first tower fell, but went to my in-law's house nearby. Together, my mother-in-law and I watched the second tower fall.

I remember thinking about all the people that we knew (relatives and friends) that worked in lower Manhatten. My husband's uncle was on top of a building on Canal Street doing some electrical work and we kept trying to find out if anyone had heard from him. Slowly, one by one, phone calls trickled in to tell us that all our immediate relations were ok. Only later that day did I speak to some of my co-workers and find out that my boss's son had been on Flight 93. I remember being completely overwhelmed by the news.

9/11 is most certainly a day that I will never forget. My sister and brother-in-law both contributed to the recovery effort at Ground Zero because she is an EMT and he is a fireman. They relayed stories and horrors too gruesome to believe. This past January I visited Ground Zero with my family. Much of the site had already been cleared but it was a very moving experience. I pray that this is the worst that I will have to see in my lifetime. Not a day goes by that I do not think of that day in September and mourn for the lives that were lost and the innocence that this nation can never recover.

My first visit to New York was last summer. I arrived on the 10 of July and that night the New York philharmonic orchestra was giving a free concert in Central Park. I went there with my aunt who lives in the Upper West Side and we bring a picnic with a couple of bottles of wine and we sat there listing and enjoying the music. I felt in love with New York that night, seeing 100 000 people just sitting and watching the concert in pure harmony with the Park.

Two months later I was in agony as I watch this beautiful city burning and crying...

I'm going back there again this July and I hope they will present a similar concert around the same date so maybe I can make peace with myself and finally end my grieve for the people who died on that day of September.

I was sitting at my computer when it happened. I had TechTV on in the background.

I was surfing around a bit, when my Fiance called and told me to turn on the news.

I fliped it over, not quite sure what I was looking at for a momment.

Once everything came into focus, I had about half a second before I saw the second plane hit. I believe there was about 10 minutes of phone silence.

Quite a emotional momment.

It was a beautiful sunny day here in Ottawa, Canada and I was driving to work about 9am. The local radio station interrupted with a broadcast from CNN announcing a plane crash at the WTC. The details were vague. I pictured a 2-seater plane and maybe the pilot had a heart attack or something. Still, I called my husband on my cell phone, who was home on vacation, and due to retire from the Canadian Navy the very next day after 21 years of service. I told him to turn on the TV and tell me what he saw. He said “I’m watching live pictures” a plane just hit the tower – a big plane”. I said, “that’s a re-run”. He said no a second plane had hit! I almost lost control! I hung up and called my mother and sisters.

By the time I got to work, I was in a full run as I hit the front door of the largest hi-tech company in the city. I made my way to the cafeteria and joined the growing crowd watching the devastating live footage. When the Pentagon got hit, I really thought it was the end of the world. There must have been 400 people in the cafeteria and people were barely breathing. We live in Canada’s capital, were we next? I scooted back home where my military man was pacing – sure that he would be called back to sea. (thankfully he never was). I wanted to pick up my girls from school, but my husband wouldn’t let me. He said they would be scared. We sat glued to the TV set all day – not believing what we were seeing. When my girls got home from school they told stories of parents arriving all day at school, some with the provisions piled in the car “just in case”. Such madness…it didn’t seem real. I didn’t sleep for weeks.

That Friday Ottawa participated in the national day of mourning. I joined 100,000 Canadians on Parliament Hill to pray for the families affected by the attack. It was the largest show of support world-wide. I am proud of the support we have shown for our American neighbours and pleased with the assistance we could provide all the stranded airplane passengers as they flooded our smallest cities on each coast.

In late November 2001 I participated in the “Canada Loves NY” weekend and joined tens of thousands of Canadians in Manhattan to show our love for NYC. I’d never been to NY before. We met some wonderful people and listened to their stories. We visiting Ground Zero….like something out of Close Encounters I felt I HAD to go. I will never forget the silent crowds, the quiet sobbing, and the disbelief on so many international faces. We are all in this together. United We Stand!
