My partner and I were on holiday in Italy and had just arrived in Florence that morning, I think there is about six hours time difference between Italy and NY. We were looking to buy some English books as we had read all ours on the train. We finally found a bookshop called Edisons in the afternoon and they had two huge televisions screens which were showing live feeds but only with Italian subtitles - the only words we could recognise were Casa Bianca (White House), Pentagon and terrorist but the pictures were telling the story. We watched the second plane hit the tower live. The TV audio was only available through headphones upstairs, and there was so many people queued for the English translation. Some people were relaying what they were hearing in English back to those people waiting.

There were so many Americans in that store, and they were watching, some crying, some speechless. At one stage I remember an American beside me watching and saying that normally you couldn't see the building that was on TV because the towers were in the way. Then another American arrived who translated the subtitles into English for the group of about 20-30 people that had gathered.

Finding any news out in the next few days was really hard, all the English newspapers would sell out and the internet cafes were packed with people logging on to CNN for updates. We did still get to NY exactly two weeks after the attacks and went to Ground Zero to pay our respects.

Hello everyone!
I am from the Pacific Northwest, but was in North Carolina with one of my daughters attending a seminar of hers. (She lives in Grand Junction, Co.) The night before 9/11, I had visions of a dark haired man grabbing a woman by the forehead (he was behind her), jerking her head back and slitting her throat. I "saw" this many times in my minds eye. My daughter was out with some friends that night. Away from home, and with her as my only point of reference, I was sure someone was going to do her unspeakable harm. I even had the security guard try and help me find her. I told him my story, but was almost unconsolable and told him when I have had visions in the past, they have come true. We found her, and that night I had a fitful sleep. She went to breakfast with her team. Immediately after it happened, she came back into the room to turn on the TV and tell me...."Mother...this is why you were so upset last night". As events unfolded and I saw the face of Atta, I KNEW in my heart he was the one pictured in my minds eye! Everyone was in a turmoil and people were renting U-hauls to get home in. We were ABSOLUTELY DRIVEN to get home. We rented the LAST car allowed to go West and drove 2,000 miles in 1 1/2 days. All we could think about was getting home to our loved ones, and praying for everyone in New York and Pennsylvania.
I have often wondered what the poor security guard thought when he heard of 9/11. We thank God for President Bush and his stand for God and country!
Thank you for letting me tell our story.

9/11/2001 started out as a normal day for me. I was previously in a wreck, so I was home instead of being in school, and I went online to chat with some friends. My mom called me to come look at where a airplane "accidentally" rammed into one of the Twin Towers. I said that was really sad, and as I went to turn around to return to my room, i heard a woman on the television scream "Oh my god, there's another one" and when I turned I saw it CRASH into the second building. I was mortified, not to mention REALLY confused. Later on the day unfolded, and I found out what really happened. This past summer I went to New York and got to see the Twin Towers, which now I'm extremely glad that I got to, and I'm glad that I got to see them before all this happened, but I'll always be affected by what happened and pray for those who were lost and those who lost some. I will also pray for those who did it, altho there isn't much to pray for...

I was in my dorm room, sleeping. My roommate burst in around 10:30 asking me to turn on my TV to the news 'cause she had just heard. Scrambling for the CNN channel, I was just able to wake up before the first tower collapsed. My roomate was a transfer from NYU, she was frantically calling her old friends for the next couple hours.

On the morning September 11th, 2001, I was sleeping. In Colorado it was just after 8:00 a.m. and my wife hadn’t wakened to drive the kids to school yet. I felt her lay down next to me, lying right up against me like couples do, and she said,”John wake up.” She repeated herself a couple of times until my responses were coherent. Then, she said, “are you sure you’re awake?” I answered, “yes”. She said, “Some one is bombing us.” “You’re just yanking me”, I laughed. “No I’m not”, she replied, then she told me how the plane had hit the WTC towers and now they were getting reports that the pentagon had been hit too. After hearing all the details she had I knew it was true, but couldn’t believe it. I took the kids to school and spent the rest of the day glued to the TV and talking to my friends and my wife who had a small TV at work.
I remember feeling how terrible this was. At the time we thought that the death toll alone was going to reach 6,000. I remember the shock. It seemed awful to keep watching the scenes like it was some sort of sick entertainment, but it was necessary to fully comprehend or even believe what had just happened.
That evening and the days that followed I went to church and prayed for those killed and their families. I guess just being together and talking about it with my family and friends is what helped most.
I had always loved my country and been proud to be an American but the fact that we all went through this together seemed to intensify and rub off It really brought us together as a country. I was so proud when people went out to get flags. I was surprised that so many people didn’t have flags but I was glad they everyone was getting one now.
I remember discussing with my father (who is a WWII vet) how pearl harbor had been the worst attack on America until now. He said the feelings at that time were much the same but after its over and years go by you never think that something like that could happen again. It makes you wonder what might happen when we are 70 years old.
I think President Bush and his staff, really everyone in the country, handled everything perfectly, and I was empresses and proud of all the celebrities who donated time and talent and money to the telethon. In fact I have it on DVD. I guess there is only one way to describe what happened. It was horrific and terrifying, and an unforgettable part of history. It brought us together as family, neighbors, and countrymen and as a world community.
